What Makes DePIN Different

Unlike most crypto primitives, DePIN protocols create tangible, measurable value in the physical world. Whether it is decentralized wireless networks, distributed compute, or sensor arrays, these protocols solve real problems that centralized incumbents either cannot or will not address at scale. The key innovation is using token incentives to bootstrap infrastructure that would otherwise require billions in centralized capital expenditure.

Consider wireless coverage: traditional telecom operators spend $30-50 billion annually on network buildout. DePIN wireless protocols like Helium have demonstrated that community-deployed infrastructure can achieve meaningful coverage at a fraction of the cost, with contributors earning tokens for maintaining hotspots.

Our Investment Framework

When evaluating DePIN opportunities, we look at four key factors: unit economics at scale, defensibility of the physical network, regulatory positioning, and demand-side adoption beyond speculative token activity. Many DePIN projects fail the last test - they generate supply-side participation through token incentives but lack genuine demand for the underlying service.

The projects we have backed, including three currently in the EASY Residency, have demonstrated real demand traction with paying customers who use the service regardless of token price dynamics.

Market Sizing

We estimate the addressable market for DePIN across wireless, compute, storage, and sensor categories at $3.4 trillion globally. Even capturing 1% of this market represents a $34 billion opportunity. Our research suggests that DePIN protocols will reach this threshold within the next 5-7 years, driven by cost advantages and the growing inadequacy of centralized infrastructure in underserved regions.
